AIM. It stands for AOL IM. That stands for AOL Instant Messenger. And that stands for America Online Instant Messenger. And that stands for itself. AIM is an instant messenger provided by AOL. It's logo is a red chat bubble with AIM in white letters inside of it. It has another logo, which I'm not sure is an older logo or not, but anyway, it's a solid yellow man who seems to be running. I've heard it been referred to as The Yellow Running Man. There are two ways to pronounce AIM. You can say it as a word, like 'aim', or say each letter individually, like A-I-M [["aye, eye, emm"]]. AIM is quite popular. It is used by millions of people across the nation. I was about to say the globe, but I guess it's called /America/ Online for a reason. x-x; There are several different Instant Messengers out there, provided by different companies. Yahoo! provides YIM, which stands for Yahoo! Instant Messenger. MSN provides...well, MSN Instant Messenger, which is usually referred to as just MSN. Even Myspace has released their own form of instant messenging, where users can download it onto their computer and chat with other users who have downloaded it. I believe it is called Myspace IM. However, it seems like, to me, anyway, AIM is the most commonly used. AIM is just like any other instant messenger - you exchange messages instantly with the 'buddies' on your 'buddy list'. You create your very own screenname and in order to talk to your friends, you have to send the message to their screenname. Everybody with AIM has their own screenname that they can make up and personalize to fit their personality and whatnot. You can personalize your settings as well. You can set your own buddy icon, which is basically a little icon that goes along with your screenname. You can find your own buddy icon from AOL which provides many different ones for you. You can also upload your own buddy icon from your computer or download icons off the internet. Besides icons, you can also personalize a background from AOL that you or your buddy can view while chatting with eachother. You can also choose the sound that you and your buddies hear when you recieve IMs from other buddies. You can also personalize the font you use while exchanging IMs with your buddies. Overall, there's a lot you can personalize on AIM to reflect you and your personality. I can get pretty annoyed with AIM. I have to start up AIM and then log in, like usual. There are three steps that AIM must go through to complete logging in. First it must connect [[connecting]], then it must transfer [[transferring]], and finally, it must negotiate [[negotiating]]. If AIM is feeling friendly, it will let me sign in error-free in less then five minutes. But usually it likes being difficult. First it will give me errors, such as a connection time-out or a server error. Sometimes it tells me I'm signing in too soon. Other times, it will stay connecting forever. Sometimes it will sign me on, but it won't let me view my buddy list, so I have to re-sign in. However, I really do appreciate downloading AIM. If it wasn't for AIM, I probably wouldn't be as close to my friends. I wouldn't be able to easily chat with people online in less then a second. Having dialup, messaging on myspace or wherever can take up to five minutes per message. For everybody who doesn't have a Myspace at school, I can talk to them on AIM [[as long as they have AIM, of course]]. Overall, AIM is a great way to communicate with your friends and gain new friends over the Internet from around the worl - ahem, the nation. =]
